From a group of young activists in Surabaya on 1 February 2002, to a leading Harm Reduction community in Jawa Timur — Sadar Hati has become a home for thousands of clients, a network of international & national partnerships, and thousands of hours of cross-generational service.

How Sadar Hati Was Born

Three key moments that shaped this foundation, from situational scoping to the birth of the institution.

Step 1 · Early 2000s
Assessment in Surabaya

A group of young people — NGO activists, volunteers, local media journalists — conducting an assessment of the HIV/AIDS and Narcotics situation in Jawa Timur.

Step 2 · Findings
Kota Malang — 2nd Most Concentrated

Surprising finding: Kota Malang = a concentrated HIV/AIDS area in Jawa Timur after Surabaya. The Surabaya team did not continue — the spirit moved to Malang.

Step 3 · Birth Moment
Sadar Hati Foundation Is Born

The new team in Malang carries out population assessment + drafting of commitments. On 1 February 2002, Yayasan Sadar Hati was born as a civil-society organization in Kota Malang.

Mas Theo laid the roots in the marginalized HIV+PWID community. Mba Watiek grew the branches — education, gender, local culture, inclusive support — without abandoning the roots. Post-rehab communities, ODHA, and the urban poor women remain at the center of our services. Spirit "doing something for a fellow human being" keeps growing, not replaced.

Sadar Hati's Mission

  1. Upholding the values of local wisdom in humanitarian work, in the spirit of one heart, one feeling.
  2. Carrying out productive work by creating opportunities for business self-reliance as a means of supporting the organization's activities.
  3. Improving the capacity of human resources (SDM) as program implementers.
  4. Reducing the impact of HIV/AIDS and drugs through health education, awareness-raising, accompaniment, counseling, care & treatment.
  5. Working to provide education and vocational facilities for the community, especially victims of drug abuse and vulnerable women.
  6. Developing cooperation with various parties for advocacy, coordination, information, and research.

In Loving MemoriamMochamad Theo Zaenuri

Founder of Sadar Hati Foundation, Chair of the Board of Trustees 2012. Author of the philosophy behind the name "Sadar Hati" and the "safety helmet" analogy that explains Harm Reduction to the general public in an elegant, easily understood way.

His leadership was carried on by his beloved wife, Mba Watiek, which brings Sadar Hati into a new era focused on Chemsex Education, Mental Health, and ADHA Support — while remaining rooted in the same founding philosophy: one heart, one feeling.

The spirit he passed on lives on in every part of Sadar Hati's work — for our fellow human beings, without discrimination, without stigma.
